The Nairobi Women in Data Science & Machine Learning Community together with the Biosciences eastern and central Africa hub are honoured to be the Nairobi WiDS ambassadors in 2018.
The Global Women in Data Science (WiDS) Conference aims to inspire and educate data scientists worldwide, regardless of gender, and support women in the field. This annual one-day technical conference provides an opportunity to hear about the latest data science related research and applications in a broad set of domains, All genders are invited to participate in the conference, which features exclusively female speakers.
WiDS will be held at Stanford university, and at 100+ regional events (including Nairobi) hosted by WiDS Ambassadors, and available via livestream. The 2018 program will feature exemplary speakers on a broad array of topics ranging from cybersecurity to astrophysics to computational finance, and more.
At the Stanford University conference, the line-up of speakers includes Anita Rao, Director of Enterprise Data Services, PayPal, Lada Adamic, Research Scientist Manager, Facebook, Jia Li, Head of Cloud R&D, Cloud AI, Google among a host of other exemplary women in Data Science.
Nairobi- WiDS
We have organised two special WiDS events : The Nairobi WiDS conference on 8th March and the Nairobi WiDS code-labs on 10th March.
Nairobi WiDS Conference
This event on 8th March, will provide a unique opportunity for you to learn, network as well as explore avenues for collaborations or partnerships.
The Biosciences eastern and central Africa hub hosted at the International
Livestock Research Institute (Nairobi, Kenya), is harnessing the power of genomics data through bioinformatics analyses to strengthen the agricultural sector in Africa. The event at the BecA-ILRI Hub will comprise local talks by female leaders as well as more junior women in various fields of data science (from business informatics to big data and the Internet of Things, from cloud computing to bioinformatics, etc) together with broadcasts of the Global WiDS conference held at Stanford a couple of days earlier.
Speakers:
We will kick-off Nairobi WiDS conference with a Keynote address from Dr. Aisha Walcott-Bryant a research scientist and manager at IBM Research Africa — Nairobi, Kenya. Her current research makes use of AI technologies to address the increasing incidence of chronic illnesses, such as many non-communicable disease affecting the continent of Africa. Specifically, she is leading a team that is developing solutions for the management of chronic illnesses by providing clinical decision support as well as patient engagement services.
This will be followed by a presentations by Linet Kwamboka, the Founder and CEO of DataScience LTD, a company that uses data to discover intelligent insights about people, products, and services. Linet, has been on the forefront of coordinating the Kenya Open Data Initiative and the Open Government Partnership for the Government of Kenya and the World Bank and Kathleen Siminyu, a Data Scientist at Africa’s Talking and co-organizer of the Nairobi Women in Machine Learning and Data Science community.
And….it get’s even better after the conference we will have Nairobi WiDS CodeLabs on 10th March 2018.
At Nairobi WiMLDS, we love to get our hands dirty with code! And what better way to do this than to have five code-labs running concurrently on 10th March at. The Code-labs will provide Introductory, Intermediate & Advanced level Data Science sessions.
