Black Girls CODE Launching 2nd Hackathon Series In 2015 | Project Humanity

The hackathon theme, Project Humanity, will put more emphasize on how girls can create positive changes in the world focusing on the ecosystem, earth and social justices themes. The team will also be engaged in building apps and solutions to address challenges in these spaces.

“Project Humanity” is about creating a good and safe environment for both humans and the earth. Our theme broadens the definition of environment to not just include the earth (water, plants, animals, etc.), but also the environments that we (humans) live in.

In New York, we will hold our hackathon at NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering, July 24 – 26th.  Read more event details here:

MENTORS – We are in need of mentors who are motivated to create an impact while helping girls develop their mobile app ideas:

Mentor Developer – We’re looking for developer volunteers with mobile or front-end experience to help student teams build apps within a web-based tool during the hackathon.  Your role will be part leader, part expert and part mad scientist to help the students articulate and scope their ideas into an app.  We will be providing app templates and tutorials as a foundation to build on.  Developers, designers, product and project managers are encouraged to volunteer for this role.

Mentor Facilitator – We’re looking for facilitator volunteers who enjoy working with kids.  Your role will be to ensure a student-led experience, help the student teams stay on task during the hackathon and provide positive feedback and encouragement.  Teaching experience or experience with youth preferred.  No technical experience needed, but a plus.  Teachers and adults engaged in youth training are encouraged to volunteer for this role.

Mentoring with the girls will REQUIRE a 2 day commitment on Saturday and Sunday, July 25-26, 2015.

Though NOT REQUIRED, we also invite mentors to join students for a series of design and presentation skills workshops on Friday, July 24th from 1pm to 6pm.
