In a move seen by many as a desperate move by BlackBerry. The company has launched a new promotional campaign that would see consumers be paid as much as $400 when they trade-in their iPhone for the company’s Passport smartphone.

Customers in the USA and Canada can be paid up to $550 for trading in their iPhone 4s, 5, 5c, 5s and 6 models. In return, they will get the business-oriented, BlackBerry Passport. This offer will, however, not extend to the UK market where the Passport smartphone retails at around £529. UK customers will still get the BlackBerry Z30 and Q10 at reduced cost.

BlackBerry has been recording losses as consumers taste shift in favor of the Android, Windows and iOS platform. But in last September, BlackBerry reduced its net loss from $965m to $207m for the 3 months to August 30th under the stewardship of John Chen.

Chen is credited for bringing major restructuring at BlackBerry, making the company focus on a particular market niche; the business community.
