Effects of 5G on Internet of Things

by Fahad Saleem

5G technology is the talk of the town as the technology is about to change the current era of connectivity forever. According to an estimate, 5G’s infrastructure market alone will be worth about $34 billion by 2020. 5G is an innovative network platform that will provide greater speeds at very low latency serving various different types of devices. Just imagine an internet connection which is 100 times faster than your current 4G! With 5G more devices and more people will be able to connect with each other at the same time.

Effects of 5G on Internet of Things

The fifth generation technology is expected to result into steadfast communication along with bringing the “Internet of Things” which is a network connecting not just computers and phones, but also smart cars, robots, security cameras, smart watches or home appliances. Moreover, it will help in developing smart cities too. 5G will move us towards massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC) which will spread data in real-time.

5G and smart cars

5G technology is the key of communication for autonomous cars. Every hour smart cars generate data in terabytes between its camera and radar system which is processed in the car. 5G will enable all this processing on the network out of the car by thousands of computer in cloud, empowering the smart cars to swiftly and easily make decisions. The car’s own computer would be there for backup in case the internet connection is lost. Interaction between vehicles and between vehicle and infrastructure will make roads safer to drive on. For smart cars to be efficient, 5G will have to be rapid, economical and reliable enough to avoid delay in transferring of data. Intel thinks that the 5G network will be oxygen for smart cars.

5G and smart cities

With the 5G technology, everything will be smart – smart buildings, smart traffic lights, smart homes or smart malls. Trees can have sensors attached to them which can transmit data for reliable decisions. The solar powered street lights can help the smart city infrastructure. Moreover, robots can perform real time operations in remote areas by connecting them to the surgeons. Device to device interaction for safety of public will be rapid as no active cellular coverage will be required. Also, firefighting robot applications would become regular and save valuable lives. Another common feature of smart city is making the parking system smarter by notifying people about free parking slots. At the core of these smart cities will be the 5G network.

5G and smart devices

As 5G technology will be faster and smarter, the devices will have to be smarter too. It will feel like technology is following us around. Smart phones, wearable devices or tablets will work together with the apps we use; this might bring augmented reality to real world. The Virtual Reality (VR) experience with streaming of multiple 4K video at an immense speed will make your home a theatre. The connectivity with smart devices will be smooth and instantaneous. VR will change the gaming experience too; gamers will revel into visually stimulating experience. The next step after 5G smart wearable devices will be 5G smart clothes, better keep an eye on it!

5G technology is being developed and tested at a faster rate. It is projected to be accessible in some cities of USA by the end of this year but major expansion will take time up till 2019. It promises versatility, ubiquitous mobility and ecosystem scalability for internet of things and beyond.
