Bending or folding screen is still perceived as a future tech development some decade or two away. However, Samsung Electronics Co. says this future is next year, as rumors as flying around from trustworthy sources that the company is prepping up to release bendable/foldable smartphones by next year 2017.

Anonymous sources reaching Bloomberg, said Samsung is set to introduce two new smartphones into the market next year. These smartphones will have bendable screens; one will fold like a cosmetic compact. These smartphones use organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) technology.

If or when Samsung launches these forward-thinking devices, it will get a head start on other device makers (read Apple Inc.) some of who have been threatening its market dominance lately. The anonymous sources say that one of the devices set to launch next year will have a 5-inch display when in handset mode, and it can be unfurled into an 8-inch device; thus, serving you as a tablet. This could be the first 2-in-1 device bundling smartphones and tablet, unlike the 2-in-1 we’re now used to with tablet and laptop.

Bloomberg cited Lee Seung Woo, an analyst at IBK Securities Co. in Seoul: “This product could be a game-changer if Samsung successfully comes up with a user interface suitable for bendable screens. Next year is a probable scenario. Their biggest obstacle was related to making transparent plastics and making them durable, which seems resolved by now.”

These said devices with foldable display codenamed ‘Project Valley’ could be unveiled as early as February 2016 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. A timely move on Samsung’s part when you consider that its biggest rival Apple is set to start using OLED displays on its upcoming devices to be released in later months of 2017.

Currently, Samsung uses OLED displays on some of its premium devices. The technology has enabled Samsung to make thinner, brighter colored and less battery draining displays. If or when it can take the OLED displays further and make foldable devices, it will have taken the game to a whole new level.
