The University of Pennsylvania’s Weiss Tech House Announces PennVention Semifinalist

The University of Pennsylvania’s Weiss Tech House has announced 25 semi-finalist teams for the first round of its 2015 PennVention Competition. PennVention is a technology innovation competition open to all students at the University of Pennsylvania. Competing teams develop a new product and work with established mentors to compete for over $20,000 in cash prizes.

This year’s competition was open to a variety of technological innovations including not-for-profit civic projects, hardware and software. Former PennVention winners include BioBots, Maculens, Kinecthesia, and uBeam.

2015 PennVention Competition Semifinalists include:

Agribots

Team Members: Carlos Vadillocvadi (2015, Wharton), Juan Abraham (2015, Wharton)

Agribots are data sensors that aid farmers to produce better crops while reducing resource consumption.

AniMotion

Team Members: Feini Qu (2015, SEAS), Peter Gebhard (2015, SEAS), Amrith Krushnakumaar (2016, Wharton) AniMotion is a low-cost, wearable device that allows self-monitoring of joint function and reduces the need for frequent physical therapy sessions.

Avenue One

Team Members: Harrison Xue (2016 SEAS), Pietro Lomazzi (2016, Wharton), Jincheng Cao (2016, SEAS), Davin Sun (2017, SEAS)

Avenue One is an e-commerce site that offers cutting-edge and exclusive apparel to gather data that helps designers and retailers optimize assortment decisions. Avenue One’s analytics make the pre-sales model feasible and allow us to reduce excess inventory, stock-outs and control SKU proliferation.

BionUX

Team Members: Adrian Lievano (2015, SEAS), Matthew Lisle (2015, SEAS), Aadithya Prakash (2015, SEAS), Freddy Hernandez (2015, SEAS), Steven Xing (2015, SEAS) BionUX or Bionic Upper Extremity is a low-cost prosthesis for above-the-arm amputees.

Dosed LLC

Team Members: Dan Fine (2014, Wharton) Dosed is a mobile solution that changes how people calculate and track their disease, how loved ones can stay alert about the status of their grandparent, parent, or child, and how clinicians may observe and treat their patients.

EyeFly

Team Members: Michael Gromis (2017, SEAS), Jeff Grimes (2014, SEAS), Bahram Banisadr (2015, Wharton, SEAS) EyeFly can film movies in a way never before possible. EyeFly drones will autonomously fly in swarms capturing multiple angles of each shot with a level of fluidity and precision.

GelCel

Team Members: Ruqayyah Malik (2015, SAS) GelCel is a user friendly and cost friendly device used to perform cell-based biological and pathological analyses.

GFRACK Technologies

Team Members: Teddy Guenin (2015, Wharton, SEAS), Ashwin Amurthur (2015, SEAS, Wharton) GFRACK is a graphene-based FET sensor platform used to give oilfield service companies and municipalities early awareness and 100% clarity about possible harmful chemicals leaked into groundwater.

HighSkeye

Team Members: Shoshana Yaffee (2015, SEAS) HighSkeye is developing a high altitude platform (>80,000 feet) that is capable of maintaining a satellite communication system at constant height for extended periods of time (>24 hours).

Mashup

Team Members: Kashish Hora (2017, SEAS) Mashup is an iOS app that provides a way for multiple people to take a video of the same event and combine their videos into a multi-camera shot.

Oncora Medical

Team Members: William Lindsay (2018, SEAS) Oncora uses historical medical record data and predictive analytics to help radiation oncologists provide better care at a low cost.

PedFlow

Team Members: Maria Lohner (2016, Wharton), Kaline Brückner Saab (2016, Wharton), Rob Hamill (2016, Wharton) PedFlow is pedestrian flow management and crowd dynamics simulation software.

Physician Insights

Team Members: Neil Vangala (2016, Wharton) Physician Insights enables physicians to measure their competitive position relative to other doctors and the percent of referral volumes they receive from a given patient.

PillPal

Team Members: Seaon Shin (2015, Wharton), Wyatt Shapiro (2014, SEAS), Lyles Swift (2014, SAS) PillPal is a smart, multi-pill dispenser designed to combat barriers associated with medicine intake. It uses textrecognition software to scan prescriptions and reduce health illiteracy, incorporates ‘nudges’ to build social support and uses success tracking to motivate better adherence.

Prayas Analytics

Team Members: Yash Kotharikothariy (2015, Wharton), Pranshu Maheshwari (2015, Wharton) Prayas Analytics is a retail analytics company that aims to empower offline retailers with access to customer data.

Project Zenkai

Team Members: Tan Tran (2015, SEAS) Project Zenkai is a smart, user-friendly exercise device that not only improves lower body strength, flexibility, and balance, but also keeps users engaged over the long-term by learning their core values with a unique algorithm and tailoring motivational messages to resonate with their intrinsic nature.

ReoveryOne

Team Members: Rishi Reddy (2016, Wharton), Nicholas Demes (2017, SEAS), Thomas Eng (2017, SEAS) RecoveryOne is a device that automatically treats trigger points developed over time in muscle tissue by applying consistent pressure to the area.

Roominnate

Team Members: Sally Huang (2015, Wharton) An interior design experience powered by photorealistic 3D rendering.

SafeNightOut

Team Members: David Cahn (2014, Wharton, SEAS), Jack Cahn (2018, SEAS, Wharton) The product is a wristband with a transdermal alcohol sensor, GPS-locater, and Bluetooth capability. The wristband has two core functions: to measure blood alcohol level and to transmit distress signals to the police in the case of an emergency.

SafeStamp

Team Members: Matt McGuire (2016, Wharton) SafeStamp is nanotechnology-based authenticity device that prevents pharmaceutical counterfeiting.

SlimCase

Team Members: Jingjing Jiang (2014, Wharton), Edward Nie (2015, Wharton) SlimCase delivers reimagined simulations that are designed to be easily deployed within existing course structures, and come with time-saving features that instructors value.

SolCharge

Team Members: Stephanie Gedal (2016, SEAS), Earn Sakornpan (2014, SEAS), Roy Mathew (2016, Wharton) Solcharge is a sustainable, fast-charging mobile charging device. SolCharge can be used as an alternative to charge devices directly or by using energy previously stored by the battery.

Thermophile

ThoughtTac Technologies

Team Members: Beatriz Gadala-Maria (2015, SAS), Marcela Argüello (2015, Wharton), Chetna Johri (2016, SEAS), Kinjal Shah (2016, Wharton, SEAS) ThoughtTac is a mobile application that supports disease management of schizophrenia patients.
