10 Habits that will make your Laptop’s Lifespan Longer

These days, our digital devices are an extension of ourselves. For some, our laptop, tablet, or smartphone are our lifeline. So it is important that these devices be in top performance for as long as possible.

#1 – Better Battery charging habits

We love laptops because they let us compute while unwired, and for them to enable us to do so, they are powered by batteries. Well, rechargeable batteries to be precise! That means it is imperative that your laptop battery gives you as many hours in between charge as much as possible.

Keeping your laptop plugged in for a long time will kill your battery faster because they are made up of lithium-polymer, which gets damage when exposed to high temperatures for an extended period. Experts recommend removing your charger when the battery re-charge level hits 80%, and plug it again when it drops to 40%. Experts believe that this charging habit can prolong the battery lifespan up to four times.

#2 – Shut Down your laptop every once in a while

Most people find it efficient to leave their laptops in sleep mode, but that habit could be bad for your device in the long run. While in sleep mode, your computer requires a steady supply of power for as long as it will be in that state. Hibernation mode is also another popular state to leave a laptop other than the sleep mode, but it consumes considerably much less power.

However, from personal experience, operating systems like Windows work much better if you occasionally reboot the devices. Sometimes some programs become buggy if you keep your laptop on Hibernation and Sleep mode all the time with little or no total system Shut Down once in a while.

Shutting down your PC also gives the hardware component a time to take a rest, and in the long run, prolong the laptop’s lifespan.

#3 – Keep all your software updated

This is a no-brainer, you need to use the latest version of any software you use. That way you will maximize the chance of keeping your digital activities secure and away from spying eyes.

#4 – Free up Hard Drive

Before undertaking this step, you need to back up your data. Then delete everything not needed on your hard drive. You should also go ahead to run disk defragmentation, find and delete duplicate files, and uninstall any programs you never use.
