60 Technicians Graduate At Samsung’s Engineering Academy In Nairobi

Back in August 2014, we ran an article about Samsung Electronics East Africa’s partnership with the Technical University of Kenya to launch the Samsung Electronics’ Engineering Academy. The graduates were mostly final year students taking IT and Engineering courses at various local Kenyan universities. The graduates were taken through a nine months program said to be 20% theoretical and 80% practical.

“The trainees have received hands-on training for free with Samsung’s top-of-the-range equipment,” said Robert Ngeru, COO at Samsung Electronics East and Central Africa.

 Top performing students will also get a chance to intern at Samsung Electronics and thereafter work as independent service technicians or employees within Samsung retail channels in their respective regions.”

Some of the graduates have already been employed by various private ICT companies, and more organizations are being encouraged to set up initiatives that will engage these graduates. More than 200 students have so far graduates from the Academy since its inception.

Samsung has set up similar Academies in Ethiopia, Nigeria and South Africa. These Academies are part of Samsung’s bigger goal of creating 10,000 highly skilled engineers across Africa by the end of 2015. The top three students in the class were awarded Samsung home electronic appliances. Samsung is addressing the shortage of qualified technicians across the continent.
