The Video on Demand (VoD) scene in Africa, and across the world is getting a little crowded and consumer more spoilt for choice. Amazon has just announced that it is availing its Prime Video to over 200 countries around the world.
Time Leslie, VP, International, Prime Video said, “We are excited to announce that starting today, fans around the world have access to Prime Video. The Grand Tour and other critically acclaimed Amazon Original Series like Transparent, Mozart in the Jungle, and The Man in the High Castle, along with hundreds of popular Hollywood movies and TV shows are now available at the introductory price of only $2.99 a month. And what’s really exciting is that we are just getting started.”
You can watch Prime Video on your mobile devices both iOS and Android using the Amazon Prime Video app. The app can also be installed in the smart TVs. Alternatively, you can watch it on your computer at PrimeVideo.com.
One advantage users especially those worried about their highly priced metered connection is the app’s option of controlling how much data is consumed while streaming and downloading videos. Users have the option of setting the visual quality from Good, Better, and Best. Good consuming the leased data while Best giving you a richer experience but at higher data consumption rate.
A move similar to what Netflix did at the last CES in Las Vegas. The two are now going to be competing head to head against each other in more markets across the globe. It would be important to note that the BBC and ITV have partnered to launch a new VoD service BritBox.
All African countries have access to the Prime Video at a reduced price of $2.99 per month for the first six months. After the six months, they will have access to the VoD streaming platform at the regular price of $5.99 per month.
Compared to Netflix’s $7.99 for basic, $9.99 for standard, and $11.99 for premium, Amazon’s Prime Video seems like the most affordable option.

For Kenyans, in Addition to Prime Video and Amazon, they have the ShowMax VoD services in their basket charging $3.30 for ShowMax Select and $8.80 for ShowMax premium. YouTube Red is also being rumored to be gearing up to start producing its own exclusive movies and TV series.
