Andela Developer In Residence Explores The Big Apple

First things first! I’m John Kariuki, a software developer and fellow at Andela in Nairobi, Kenya.

I have been an Andelan for the past 1 year and 1 month and it has been an amazing journey so far! During that period, I have worked as part of a distributed team in Lagos and Nairobi that was migrating to a scalable Microservice architecture.

I am currently placed with First Access, an Andela partner and New York-based credit scoring and profiling platform for microlenders in emerging markets.

Developer In Residence

Over the coming weeks, I will be working from the New York office as a Developer in Residence, a quarterly initiative by Andela that exposes fellows to…well something different.

While I will still be working full time as a developer at First Access, I will be spending time with the Andela sales and marketing teams, traveling across vibrant tech communities in USA (I can’t wait to tell you guys about San Francisco!) and networking with the developer community.

Why I’m I psyched up about this, you ask?

Now, I have been a developer since 2011, a year before I joined campus. I have founded a startup straight out of campus that successfully failed. I have interacted with the tech community in Nairobi since my freshman year and seen many of my friends succeed and fail in their startups too.

But that’s just it!

Being a developer in Residence has given me the opportunity to learn and grow myself beyond that and I am honestly looking forward to it!

I will be sharing weekly posts on my experience and journey, lessons learned and amazing pictures of anything and everything that catches my eye.
