Siemens Stiftung, a global foundation operating in the fields of basic education, service and culture has announced the opening of application for its ‘Empowering People Award 2015. A competition geared at identifying innovative technical solutions that seek to address some the challenges faced globally in basic supply.
This contest looks at low-tech innovation within the following eight categories: Water & Waste Water, Waste Management, Sheltering, Healthcare, Food & Agriculture, Energy, Sheltering and Information & Communication.
Rolf Huber, the Managing Director of Siemens Stiftung, said, “The goal of the contest is ultimately to empower people in developing regions to have access to basic services for their daily needs. We want to locate creative solutions, and we are eager to work with innovative teams to bring their solutions to the lives of those who need them most.”
Inventors and developers are encouraged to submit their applications. Their entries will be assessed by an interdisciplinary and multicultural jury. First place, second place, and third place winners will be awarded EUR50,000, EUR30,000, and EUR20,000 respectively. All candidates that emerge top 20 will walk away with EUR5,000, and the winner of the Community Prize will walk home with hardware worth EUR3,000. They will be judged by the empowering people global online community.
The winners will also automatically become part of a broader endeavor, ‘The Empowering People. Network’, where they will have their innovations showcased and promoted as part of the Solutions Database.

This award was launched back in 2012 in Munich, where Siemens Stiftung is headquartered. Ever since its launch, it has supported dozens of initiatives and network partners consisting of engineers from all walks of life and fields. Together, they help maximize the impact the initiative has.
