Barclays Bank Appoints Three More Women To Its Board

On August 11th, Barclays Bank of Kenya made the announcement of the appointment to three more women to its Board bringing the total number of women sitting on the board to five. The announcement made by Francis Okomo-Okello, Chairman of the Board at Barclays Bank.

Okello further noted that these appointments will enhance the Board’s mix of skills that will be key to achieving the Bank’s strategic agenda.

We are greatly honoured that these three distinguished business leaders have agreed to join our Board. We believe that the sum total of their individual achievements and experience will enable us navigate the business through the highly dynamic industry we are operating in and ultimately, help us realise our goal of becoming Kenya’s ‘Go-To’ bank,” Okello said.

The three women who have just joined Barclays Banks Board are as follows:

Dr Laila Macharia: She is the Founder and CEO of Africa Metro (previously known as Scion Real) – a pan-African investment company focusing mainly on urban development. She is also the current Vice Chairman of Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA).

Dr Macharia is a lawyer by training and can boast of rich experience in structuring and advising on corporate finance transactions. She brings on board her experience in public-private partnerships, infrastructure and property development, which will be an asset to the Bank considering the Bank’s increased pursuit for more public sector deals.

Norah Odwesso: She currently serves as the Public Affairs and Communications Director at Coca-Cola Central, East & West Africa Limited. She can boast of a wide experience in helping organisations meet the various challenges of the ever dynamic business environment which is fast becoming the subject of scrutiny by many stakeholders. Odwesso’s guidance on board Barclays Bank’s Board might come in handy in promoting and preserving the Barclays brand.

Winnie Ouko: She is the Co-Founder and Director at Lattice Consulting Limited – a corporate finance, project finance and strategy advisory firm in Kenya. She comes from an accounting background with some strong technical skills in project financing, strategy formulation and financial analysis.

Ouko’s contribution to the Bank will come in handy especially in terms of accountability to the stakeholders in risk management and execution of the Bank’s defined strategy.

Barclays continues to be at the forefront of promoting diversity and inclusion not just at the leadership levels but throughout the organisation by creating an environment that recognises employee diversity. Through initiatives such as the Women Network Forum, we have continued to strengthen the participation of women in leadership and decision-making by preparing them through mentoring, coaching and stretch assignments,” said Jeremy Awori, the Managing Director at Barclays Bank.
