For about 100 years now, the Boy Scouts of America has been a boys-only-club. It was designed to be so and has consistently remained as so, until now. Going forward, this testosterone only club will be admitting members of the opposite gender.

The Boys Scouts of America made this announcement today that they will start enrolling girls into the club. Once enrolled, girls will be treated equally to their male counterparts and stand a fair chance of becoming a Cub Scout and earn the coveted rank of Eagle Scout. The Eagle Scout is the most coveted honor that can be bestowed on the Boy Scouts members.

We believe it is critical to evolve how our programs meet the needs of families interested in positive and lifelong experiences for their children,” said Michael Surbaugh, the CEO of Boy Scouts.

The decision to enroll girls into Boy Scouts was a unanimous decision made by the board of directors. No doubt, the board made a historic change and a first-of-its-kind for a club that has only enrolled boys for over 100 years now.

Girls will start enrolling into the Cub Scout units called the dens come 2018. As from next year, the local scouting organization will have the options of creating dens for girls and dens for boys. That is to say; a Cub Scout den will either have just girls or just boys; not both genders within the same den.

The Boys Scout of America has also created a unique program for older girls come 2019. In that program, the older girls too, just like their younger counterparts, will have the chance of earning the Eagle Scout.
