Brace yourself for 1TB Plus Smartphone onboard storage thanks to this new Samsung chip

In today’s world, if there is one thing that virtually all of us can do without, is our smartphones. That little ‘pocket computer’ carries everything in our life. Access to our kids, spouse, family, friends, workmates, businesses, entertainment, education, bank, and even our freaky sides.

It is also quite easy to create multimedia content with our phones, given the camera and video quality keeps advancing each year. High Definition videos and pictures tend to take up more storage space, and people love their HD phone camera. We are constantly taking snaps here and there. With that comes a great need for storage; and a big one for that.

Sure most high end smartphone these days comes with pretty ample onboard storage space, but still, it is nothing remotely close to one terabyte (1TB). Samsung has been working on just that, and they recently unveiled a new storage chip that could make fitting a 1TB memory on a smartphone possible.

The Korean manufacturer recently announced it has successfully created the world’s first 1TB embedded Universal Flash Storage (eUFS) chip for smartphones. Samsung wants to give us a future where smartphones and laptops have the same storage space.

The 1TB eUFS is expected to play a critical role in bringing more notebook-like user experience to the next generation of mobile devices,” announced Cheol Choi, the executive VP of Memory Sales and Marketing at Samsung.

Mass production of the 1TB eUFS has already begun at Samsung’s production plants. The company says the chip has a read speeds of up to 1,000Mbps; that twice the average speed of a 2.5-inch SATA SSD and still faster Samsung’s earlier-released 512GB chip.

So what can you do with 1TB storage on your phone?

Actually, there is a lot of things you can store on your phone with 1TB memory space. For instance, 260 10-minutes 4K videos. That’s gigantic space! It is also interesting to note that the 1TB chip will have the same size as the 512GB counterpart, so OEMs will not have to make the phone bigger to accommodate it.

The current Samsung flagship phone, the Galaxy Note 9 maxes out onboard storage at 512GB. Additionally, it supports extended memory via microSD slot of up to 512GB, which means you can still attain 1TB storage on this device.

However, the future Samsung flagship phone will come with 1TB onboard storage, and perhaps it will support memory expansion by supporting microSD cards of up to 1TB. We are looking at a situation where you could be walking around with up to 2TB worth of storage space on your phone. And there goes the need for cloud storage in some cases.

The Samsung Galaxy S10

There are unconfirmed reports that Samsung next flagship phone, the Galaxy S10, will have the 1TG eUFS chip. This device is expected to be unveiled this month.
