Empowering Girls and Inspiring Boy Champions!
Digital Girl, Inc. and National Grid teams up with Mercedes-Benz & Mattel for a girls STEM initiative
Mercedes-Benz and Mattel will once again partner with Digital Girl, Inc and National Grid for “Girls Code Cars” as part of Mercedes- Benz and Mattel’s No Limit Initiative. To further tackle the issue of gender stereotypes, students from different schools around Brooklyn that partner with Digital Girl, Inc. including Brooklyn Charter School, Warren Prep Academy, and The Dock Street School will visit National Grid’s MetroTech Center offices from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at for a day of STEM-related activities.
They will watch a short film and engage in dialogue about rally car driver, Ewy Rosqvist’s historic 1962 Argentinian Grand Prix performance. Afterward, the students will participate in a coding class and create a racing game. They will also receive a first of a kind toy car to commemorate the initiative and watch the debut of a short film around the No Limit Initiative in which students from Digital Girl, Inc.’s coding program will appear.
“To know that Digital Girl, Inc. is a part of a national initiative that embodies the same message as our is humbling and exciting all at the same time,” says Digital Girl, Inc. Founder & Executive Director, Michelle Gall.
“I am eager to provide another group of young people with this amazing experience.” Like the first event, this one also features a film about Ewy Rosqvist. She and co-pilot Ursula Wirth made history on November 4, 1962, in the Argentinian Grand Prix. These two ladies rocketed across the finish line three hours ahead of the competition, setting a speed record of 126 km/h (78 mph). Having won this very difficult race, Rosqvist is quoted with saying “They said I could never finish, so I finished first.”
The purpose of Girls Code Cars and the No Limit Initiative is to show children, particularly young girls, that they can aspire to be and do anything they desire. Similarly to the STEM programs offered by Digital Girl, Inc., this event is not limited to girls only.
Furthermore, November 4th is not only the anniversary of Ewy Rosqvist’s winning performance – it also marks the fifth year that Digital Girl, Inc. has been providing service to the community!
