‘Don’t Use Xperia Series Smartphones Underwater’ Sony Recants On Earlier Warranty

If you are like me, and you are always glued to your mobile device chatting with friends and staying updated on the current matters online. Then simple things a walk outside when it is raining should not stop you from using your device out of fear of water damage to your smartphone.

Hell, not even ‘showering’ will keep you from using your phone. You simply take it with you in the bathroom and in between showers you take breaks to reply to chats or even answer a call as you stand in the shower with the water still running. If they ask “what’s all that sound in the background”, you simply tell them to focus on the reason they called.

Then, there is that ‘Kodak-moment’ you simply can’t pass; the underwater selfie when swimming underwater in the swimming pool with your friends.

If you fit the above description, then you are probably a fan of the Sony Xperia series smartphones; best known for their dust and waterproof qualities. I don’t know about the dustproof qualities, but most people with the Xperia series bought them for their waterproof qualities, specifically for taking underwater pictures and videos.

Now, Sony the maker of the Xperia series has altered the terms and condition of their Xperia warranty. On their web page, Sony now writes:

The IP rating of your device was achieved in laboratory condition in standby mode, so you should not use the device underwater, such as taking pictures. Do not use the device to take photos while performing any type of activity underwater, including diving or snorkeling.”

So according to Sony, your dust and water-proof Xperia device is only meant to be used with “wet fingers,” around dusty environments or “taking photos and movies in wet surroundings.” They have been very categorical on not using your Xperia device underwater.

Sony further goes to caution, “Remember not to use the device underwater. If you accidentally get the device wet with non-fresh water, wash the device with tap water.” In case you get dust on your Xperia device, Sony says, “Just make sure you wash off all the dust on your device using water from the tap afterwards.”

Sony categorically states, “Sony devices that are tested for their waterproof abilities are placed gently inside a container filled with tap water and lowered to a depth of 1.5 meters. After 30 minutes in the container, the device is gently taken out, and its functions and features are tested.”

That being said, Xperia series smartphone fans will be disappointed to learn that Sony warranty on water damaged devices that were submerged underwater will be void. So before you go for the next Sony Xperia Z5 flagship smartphone being touted as “dust and water proof” know that ‘marine use’ leading to water damage will not be covered.
