“Drones Can Create 1M Jobs Across Africa by 2025” Experts Say

On Tuesday July 29th, technology experts from across the world convened at the University of Nairobi for a Google think tank project dubbed ‘Solve for X’. Google’s goal for the project is for world market leaders to come together and in collaboration brainstorm on innovative solutions to the various problems facing different parts of the world. The ‘Solve for X’ project kicked off on February 1st, 2012 at a 3-Day convention held in San Martin, California.

On Tuesday July 29th, technology experts from across the world convened at the University of Nairobi for a Google think tank project dubbed ‘Solve for X’. Google’s goal for the project is for world market leaders to come together and in collaboration brainstorm on innovative solutions to the various problems facing different parts of the world. The ‘Solve for X’ project kicked off on February 1st, 2012 at a 3-Day convention held in San Martin, California.

The letter X in ‘Solve for X’ represents a remedy and remedies for African problems are exactly what the Tuesday event came up with. The event ended with members having come up with innovative solutions on how some of the problems unique to the continent of Africa can be solved.

One of the proposals was using drones in Africa to boost agricultural production and distribution of medicines to Africa’s rural and remote regions. Kola Masha, the MD of Doreo Partners – an agriculture-focused African impact-investing firm, gave a detailed report on how Africa can generate 1 million jobs by 2025 through incorporating technology into agricultural practices.

Masha cited the growing number of unemployed youths, and said to effectively tackle this challenge, we need to come up with innovative solutions. He suggested that using drones and advanced satellite mapping as one of the solutions to this alarming problem.

Asel Sartbaeva, from Royal Society University Research Fellow, said that technology can go a long way in promoting health services especially in Africa’s rural and remote regions where it takes a long time for medical supplies transportation to reach due to poor transport infrastructures.

Sartbaeva further noted that about 40% of vaccines get deactivate while being transported to far remote destinations. The deactivation comes, as a result, of refrigerating the vaccines during en route. Resulting in a large number of children dying despite vaccinations being administered to them.

Her solution to this problem is to use a Silica coating on the vaccines; it is a new technology that has proven to be effective in preserving medicines that are being transported to far and remote regions.

Sara Menker, Founder and CEO of Gro Intelligence; a company that uses big data to solve world food insecurity, proposed using algorithmic data platforms to come up with solutions that will make food cheap and plentiful globally.
