Black & Latina Civic Tech: STEM for Social Good

March 19, 2015
6:30 – 8:30 PM

Keynote Address By:
Kathryn Finney
Managing Director of digitalundivided & White House Champion for Change

Kathryn Finney will give the keynote address for Black and Latina Civic Tech: STEM for Social Good at Civic Hall. As managing director of digitalundivided, Kathryn has created a social enterprise that in the last three years has helped women and minority founders of tech companies raise over $10 million in angel funding. Her keynote will be followed by a panel of Black and Latina women changemakers discussing their work in the civic tech space.

Initiatives like our Focus Fellowship disrupt pattern matching in tech by identifying Black and Latina women founders of tech enabled companies… This is the only way Black female and Latina founders like Nicole Sanchez and Nichelle McCall could raise close to seven figures during their seed rounds,” said Finney.

In 2013, she was honored as a White House Champion for Change for Tech Inclusion for her work with digitalundivided.  Finney is continuing this work with Project Diane, an initiative to identify black women founders of tech companies, launching this month.

Black and Latina Civic Tech: STEM for Social Good is the brainchild of Mutale Nkonde, creator of the Year of the Black Woman, a 365-day series of online and in-person events focused on Black and Latina wealth creation, and founder of Nkonde & Associates.

“The event is designed to lay the foundation for a robust Black and Latina civic tech community in New York,” says Nkonde. “New York has the fastest growing start up communities in the country.  We’re organizing so Black and Latina tech founders can use their collective brilliance to make New York City a more open and equitable place.

This event will launch the Year of the Black Woman Tech Power Series of events designed to support the development of Black and Latina owned tech companies, and will be co-hosted by Civic Hall, and the Year of the Black Woman.

The recently opened Civic Hall, is a coworking community focused on social innovation. “Civic Hall is designed to build a community of civic technologists from across New York City” said Micah Sifry, co-founder of Civic Hall. “We are happy that Black and Latina women on the civic tech scene have chosen to celebrate Women’s History Month with us, and we look forward to collaborating with them in the future.”
