Facebook App Is Draining Your Battery Faster For iOS Users

If you have been using the Facebook app on your iOS device, iPhone and iPad, you might have noticed your device runs out of power faster than it should. While, there have been speculations that point the blaming finger at the Facebook, so far the social network has not confirmed or dispelled the accusations.

The prevailing theories points out the culprit to be Facebook’s optional Location History feature to be causing the faster battery power drain. Well, Facebook’s engineering manager, Ari Grant has come out not to deny that Facebook is indeed the culprit that is draining your iOS device’s battery faster, but to refuted claims that the optional location tracking feature is to blame.

In a blog post, Grant pointed out the culprit as follows: “The first issue we found was a ‘CPU spin’ in our network code. ‘A CPU spin’ is like a child in a car asking, ‘Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?’ With the question not resulting in any progress to reaching the destination. This repeated processing causes our app to use more battery than intended.”

The Facebook investigation team looking into the complaints by users on the app draining their iOS devices battery fast also discovered a second problem, caused by the app audio system. They said, “If you leave the Facebook app after watching a video, the audio session sometimes stays open as if the app was playing audio silently.

This is similar to when you close a music app and wants to keep listening to the music while you do other things except in this case it was unintentional, and nothing kept playing. The app isn’t actually doing anything while awake in the background, but it does use more battery simply by being awake. Our fixes will solve this audio issue and remove background audio completely.

If you are an iOS device user experiencing faster battery drain, try updating the Facebook app on your device. That is if the app update system has not been set to automatic. You can also update by following this link to the Facebook app on iTunes.
