Guy Rosen, Product Management Director at Facebook, earlier today made an announcement on Facebook’s Newsroom, of the launch of the Internet.org app that will enable people access the very basic services over the internet for free.

Guy Rosen, Product Management Director at Facebook, earlier today made an announcement on Facebook’s Newsroom, of the launch of the Internet.org app that will enable people access the very basic services over the internet for free.

The Internet.org app is set to remove the affordability barrier many people especially in developing countries are faced with, when it comes to benefiting from internet-based services. The app enables user browse useful information on health, employment and local information without having to pay for data charges.

By enabling free basic services provision through the app, Facebook hopes to make people aware of the valuable services found online that they are missing, and this would get more people online.

Facebook has first launched the Internet.org app to users in Zambia on the Airtel Zambia network and intends to roll out the services to the rest of the world in the future. Airtel Zambia subscribers can enjoy the following through the app: Google Search, Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action (MAMA), Women’s Rights App (WRAPP), Zambia uReport, and eZeLibrary among others.
