Facebook Marketplace launches to enable you to Sell and Buy Items from users near you

Facebook has added a new product line to its services offerings. An online marketplace where users can buy and sell items from other Facebook users around them.

The Facebook Online Marketplace works in more or less the same way OLX, Jumia Marketplace (locally in Kenya) and eBay, Craigslist, and Gumtree (abroad) works. It is a user-to-user online platform where they can buy and sell goods with one another.

The Facebook Marketplace will launch this week across the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. Although currently, Facebook users do make sells or purchases on the social network. The launched Marketplace is an additional platform dedicated to just selling and buying items from other users, as opposed to posting on Facebook groups or one’s Page.

Stats show that already some 450 million Facebook users actively buy and sell

goods on the social network per month. Primarily through the Facebook groups. As Bown Pan, the Facebook Project Manager says, the social network is now formally giving users a marketplace for conducting such businesses.

How Facebook Marketplace works

Facebook is set to replace the Messenger icon, in the center of the bottom row when using the mobile app, with the Marketplace icon. When you tap this icon, you will be taken to an algorithmically generated page cataloging all the various items Facebook thinks you might be interested in.

Of course, there’s data mining on you to serve you the best suggestion on items you could be interested in, based on the Facebook pages you have liked. After a while, once you made a purchase or two from the Facebook Marketplace, they will also show you items based on your previous purchasing history.

The platform allows you to message the seller of any particular item up for

sale, and make an offer on the same. To sell an item, just upload a picture of it, fill out its name, description, and price. From there, you will have to confirm your location, and voila! Patiently wait for clients to browse through it, hoping one needs what you got to sell.
