For a while now the rumor mills have been churning out news that Andy Rubin – Android co-creator – is working on starting his own company, and is in the process of launching a new smartphone. Well, the rumors were true, and Rubin has launched the Essential Phone.

Rubin designed the phone from the ground-up and released it on May 30th. The phone comes with 5.71-inch QHD (2560*1323) display. The screen runs from edge-to-edge with an aspect ratio of 19:10. The chassis of the phone is a Titanium frame, with a ceramic back and a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 screen.

Under the hood, the Essential Phone is powered by a Snapdragon 835 chip, backed with 4GB RAM and 128GB ROM with UFS 2.1 technology. The device is juiced up by a 3040mAh battery. The phone comes with Dual Camera set up with an 8MP front camera capable of 4K video recording and a 13MP rear camera with one RGB and one Monochrome.

As for the mobile operating system, the Essential Phone comes with the pure Android Nougat out of the box. For connectivity, the phone gives you the latest Bluetooth 5, and USB-C port. It also has a fingerprint reader at the back and a magnetic connector for attaching mods. Just like the iPhone 8, the Essential Phone does not come with the headphone jack. You get a dongle in the box instead.

Rubin and company claim since the phone has a titanium chassis and Corning Glass 5 for the display, it will not scratch, dent, or bend. They are so confident about it, so much so, that they are not selling any cases for the phone. The Essential Phone is already available on the company site for retails at $700.
