The world right now literally revolves around Russia; or rather the World Cup 2018 games in Russia. Media houses around the world have their camera lenses pointed the sporting activities around the country.
One female reporter, Colombian Julieth Gonzalez Theran, working as a sports reporter for Deutsche Welle covering the World Cup activities in the Saransk city had a rather tough time with a male fan. She was reporting live from the city before the kick off of the World Cup, when all of a sudden a male fan approached her and put his hand on her breast and then went ahead to kiss her on the cheek.
Amazingly, Theran continued reporting as she was on live TV, the distraction from the crazy and clearly obnoxious fan did not seem to stop her.
After the live TV coverage, Theran took to social media to air her anger at the incident. She said:
“I was there for around two hours preparing my things and nothing happened to me. But when we were live that man took advantage of it. He came at me, gave me a kiss and he touched my breast. I had to continue, afterwards I tried to see if the man was till there but he had left.”
The treatment Theran had, only goes to show the level of gender disparity in the professional world, and how women are not viewed much beyond their sexuality. I mean, here is a professional reporter doing her job, but the fact that she is a woman, she is still first and foremost being objectified.
“We do not deserve this treatment. We are equally as professional and deserving. I share the joy of football but we must identify the limits between affection and harassment,” added Theran.
