Fix Desktop Icons Have Disappeared in Windows 10

Windows 10 users are facing the issue of desktop icons being disappeared, there are no icons being shown on the desktop. But when they go to the desktop through file explorer, the desktop icons are there. The items have not been deleted, but somehow they have been hidden from the desktop. Below is how to fix desktop icons have disappeared in Windows 10.

Right-Click

The simplest solution you can try to fix desktop icons have disappeared in Windows 10 is to right-click anywhere on the desktop. Then, in the drop-down menu shown, go to view and select show desktop icons. If the show desktop items have already been selected, uncheck it and then select it again.

Desktop Icon Visibility

To fix desktop icons disappeared in Windows 10, go to Settings and click on Personalization. Now, on the left pane, select Themes and then on the right pane click on Desktop icon settings. Finally, select the icons you want to be displayed on the desktop and click on Apply and OK buttons.

Tablet Mode

Go to your PC/laptop’s Settings and then go to System. Under the System tab, go to Tablet mode. Now, turn on the two buttons shown, i.e. ‘make windows more touch-friendly’ and ‘hide icons.’ Then, toggle both of them to off settings. Finally, go back to your desktop and hopefully, the desktop icons will appear. This will fix desktop icons disappeared in Windows 10.

Random File

Another solution to fix desktop icons disappeared in Windows 10 is to right click on the empty desktop. Then, create a file randomly and that is it! The desktop icons will reappear on the desktop.

File Explorer

As the desktop icons are visible under desktop in file explorer, go to it and select all the icons. Now, right click and choose ‘send to desktop’ to send them all to the desktop. This would bring the desktop icons back on the desktop and fix desktop icons disappeared in Windows 10.

Sort by Name

To fix desktop icons disappeared in Windows 10, right click on the empty desktop. Then, go to sort by and select ‘name.’ The desktop icons will reappear on the desktop.

Another Monitor

A reason for desktop icons being disappeared is sometimes due to another monitor being attached. Unplug the other monitor and change to ‘tablet mode’ and then back again. This will fix desktop icons have disappeared in Windows 10.

Reinstall/Reboot Windows 10

If all the above solutions don’t fix desktop icons have disappeared in Windows 10, then the only solution left is to reinstall your Windows 10. Make sure you back-up your data to prevent any data loss. If you don’t want to reinstall your Windows 10, you can reboot it from the start menu to resolve this issue. This would restart the Windows from scratch. To reboot, go to power and then while pressing and holding the shift key, click on restart.
