Foodie Favorites!
Do you consider yourself a foodie? According to the web, a foodie can be described as a person who has a deep, passionate love for food that goes far beyond just eating for the sake of it but rather, enjoys eating food for the new experience and new discoveries that come along with sampling different dishes.
2014 was a great year for foodies all around the world as there were some great and delectable food inventions as well as a revival of some old but good dishes that received a newfangled interest.
With that said, if you are a self-proclaimed foodie and you’re good with keeping up with the latest food trends then you would know all about these delectable dishes that made their mark, not only in 2014 but are still just as fresh and as popular the world over.
The cronut!
Described as “an ingenious cross between a croissant and a doughnut”, this wonderful pastry made its mark and rose to 17th position on the global recipe list after its arrival last year.
Thanks to a French chef known as Dominique Ansel, the cronut debuted in his bakery in New York and has been an international phenomenon across the globe.
It may sound simple, but there’s more to just creating a cross breed of a croissant and donut as both of these pastry dough’s are made using very different baking methods. (Donuts are deep fried while croissants are baked).
Dominique’s cronuts became so famous that people would line up as early as 6:00AM in the morning just to get one and even then there is no guarantee as Dominique will only make up to 250 cronuts a day. So popular is the cronut that there’s even a black market where you can purchase them for up to eight times their normal value!
Thankfully in Nairobi you don’t have to wake up in the wee hours of the morning to attain a cronut ; apart from making delicious donuts one of hellofood’s newest vendors Mr. Donut has the recipe and you can order a box of cronuts for your pleasure! (You shouldn’t consider yourself a foodie if you haven’t tried one yet!)
Deviled Eggs!
Perfect as a light dinner, an appetizer or even for brunch, deviled eggs are a simple and delectable dish that can raise the ordinary taste of the boiled egg and take it to a whole new level.
After boiling an egg as you normally would, you will scoop out the yolk and mix it with any one or two of the above mentioned ingredients and you have the option of including spices or herbs to your liking. Then you can either use a spoon or a piping bag to stuff the Egg and enjoy this delicious treat. It is best serve cold.
Banana Bread!
It isn’t really clear why banana bread suddenly became a food of interest to many but according to pastry Maven Brooks Headley, he believes that Banana bread is mostly popular because it puts to good use bananas that are close to their inedible stage, read: rotten.
Another alternate reason is that banana bread apparently makes great breakfast or dessert. Banana bread can be made a whole lot healthier by using whole-grain flour instead of refined flour. Now, depending on where you get your banana bread from, it can either be a healthy snack or you could just permit yourself to indulge in your sweet tooth tendencies.
