Google Assistant now available on Sonos smart speakers

If you have a Sonos speaker, you might find no need to buy the Google Home speakers. Google Assistant is now available on Sonos to help you accomplish tasks without you having to move an inch.

Sonos One and Sonos Beam owners just need to update the software in their smart speakers to kick start Google Assistant. If you own an older Sonos speaker, you can still use Google Assistant by linking the speakers to a Google Assistant or Google Home Mini enabled smartphone.

One of the popular features with Google Assistant is the ability to control media playback by voice. For instance, you can stream music, album, and create a playlist by simply talking to the smart speakers. It can access music streaming services such as YouTube Music, Pandora, and Spotify.

You can also ask the speakers for weather updates, news updates, make calendar schedules, and even control devices such as Chromecast.

The Google Assistant feature not available on Sonos

Not all Google Assistant features have been ported to the Sonos devices. For instance, you cannot make phone calls, access your contacts, and do voice match over these devices. Perhaps that is something in the pipeline now that Sonos has struck a partnership deal with Google.

Amazon’s Alexa is also available on Sonos One and Sonos Beam. So owners of these devices have the option of either using Google Assistant or Alexa on their smart speakers.

We value freedom of choice, empowering listeners to choose what they want to listen to and how they want to control it. Adding voice, now with the Google Assistant, has made that control even easier,” said Patrick Spence, the CEO at Sonos.
