Search engine giant, Google, has granted $1.5 million to Siyavula Education. The fund is actually going to the non-profit arm of Siyavula to provide free access to their math practice service to 150,000 girls in South African and another 150,000 girls in Nigeria.
Siyavula started a math learning campaign (#1MillionMaths) where it intends to kick-start students preparations for the 2017 end year exams. The campaign is calling on learners to complete the one million math questions Siyavula is providing online on its e-learning platform this month.
The NGO is giving free access to its premium online math courses to all Grade 8-12 students in South Africa.
“Both Google and Siyavula harness technology to make information and education more accessible,” said Nick Cain, Google.org’s Program Manager for Education. “We want to demonstrate how powerful this can be by providing learners with access to this tool during their preparations for exam.
Siyavula CEO, Mark Horner added: “Siyavula has launched the #1MillionMaths Challenge to show the reach and scale that technology enables, as well as the incredible impact that practice can have when learning math. We’ve designed our software to adapt to each learner’s level, so they practice smarter, not just harder.”
The learners get rewards for getting the right solutions
Siyavula and Google partnership will make for a gratifying learning experience for the students. Not only is the platform designed to teach them math in a smarter way, they also get rewards for getting the solutions right.
The Grade 12 learners preparing for the end year exams will practice on self-marking math questions for Mathematics Paper 1 and Paper 2. For getting certain numbers of questions right, the learners will be rewarded by Siyavula with gifts ranging from data, Google Play vouchers, and mobile phones.
Google.org also intends to sponsor the best students from a cohort of 150,000 learners from low fee public school that participate in this challenge. The top learners will have free access to Siyavula online course for free throughout the year 2018.
