Google Chrome browser is set to receive an update. Google is working on the finishing touches before pushing out the update. However, they do that all the time, and there’s hardly any reason for you to particularly pay attention.
Well, Google Chrome 64 update should interest you. Why? Because you are probably reading this article on an unsecured browser, all thanks to the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerability that is currently bedevilling Intel-powered devices.
With Chrome 64, Google has baked in mitigation measures that will secure you from the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities. It also comes with a number of useful features. For instance, Chrome 64 will come with an improved pop-up blocker; one that will detect links masquerading as play buttons. The pop-up blocker will protect you from transparent overlays and dupe you into clicking harmful links.
The update will also come with protection from malicious auto-redirects from third-party contents embedded in web pages and block third-party iframes unless you choose to directly engage them.
Another feature that is coming with the update is site-wide auto-mute, which means those annoying sites that begin to autoplay sounds immediately the load up will be a thing of the past. Chrome 64 will also come with HDR video support for Windows 10 PCs, which will improve the viewing experience for users using HDR hardware (monitor and graphics card).
Last but not least, the browser update comes with changes to the V8 Javascript engine meant to make it harder for exploit speculative side-channel attack; though it might come with a performance penalty.
