Google Sky Maps: Availability for App Store, Android and More

Google has a partnership with NASA using which it makes Google Earth and Sky images of heavenly and massive bodies almost real.  It enables users to fly to or from anywhere on Earth virtually. Google Sky is used to view a map of the stars in the night sky.  It can be used from Android phone or tablet to view a virtual version of the stars. Several other uses of Google Sky include:

  • Finding constellations for night viewing
  • Viewing the sky in the city or in other conditions that have much light pollution
  • Viewing virtual version of the night sky when it is cloudy
  • Viewing the stars during the daytime

Google Sky has a collection of hi-resolution images of space from NASA, the Digital Survey Consortium and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey that one can view, similar to the images of locations on Google Earth or Google Maps.

Are Google Sky maps available?

Google Sky maps can be accessed from web browser, desktop and Android mobile phones. However, they are not available on app store.

From web browser, you can navigate to Google Sky. You can use your cursor to click-hold and drag in order to move to a new location.

If you use the desktop version of Google Earth, click on the planet button on the top of the Google Earth application window. You can also use Google Earth to view Google Mars and Google Moon. Google Sky uses featured layer content in Google Earth. You can search for constellations and other heavenly bodies by typing the keywords in the search box.

On Android, you need to go into the Sky Map application. You can’t use Google Earth app to go to Google Sky since there is too much data for an app to handle. Sky Map app is no more supported by Google and is now open-source.

Google Sky for App Store

Unfortunately, Google Sky Maps are not available on app store. However, you can access sky maps through an alternative way. There is an app which you can use, however. The application is named as ‘Star Walk’. This is the most beautiful stargazing app that works like Google Sky maps for iPhone users. After launching the app, you need to point your iPhone at the night sky and you will see the stars, planets, satellites and constellations in their proper place from your location. On moving the device, the star map updates in real time. In addition to the Moon which is the first easiest target, it allows you to explore over 200,000 celestial bodies. You can also access Sky Maps by using the ‘Planets’ app. This application on app store is free, simple and provides you great features like 3D viewing that uses your compass.
