Got A New Phone? How To Transfer All WhatsApp Messages From Old Phone To New Phone

We all love to WhatsApp to friends and family. This is probably why the app became so popular that Facebook Inc. had to buy it. Be that as it may, whenever you buy a new phone or had to replace your usual phone. You always must start the conversation thread with your chat buddies from scratch; you can’t pick up right where you left off on the new phone.

Well, this need not necessarily be the case if your old phone and the new or replacement phone both run on Android OS. Innov8tiv is going to show you how to continue transfer all your WhatsApp messages from your old phone to your new phone; Android smartphones that is.

Step 1 – Backup all your messages

Go to your old phone and run the WhatsApp app, tap on the three dots at the top-right corner of the app and a drop-down menu will appear. Then go to ‘Settings’ and tap. Go to ‘Chat settings’ and navigate to ‘Backup conversations’. Tap this and the phone will automatically backup all your messages.

Step 2 – Move Backup files from the Old Phone to New Phone

The next step is fairly easy, just not as easy as step 1 above. You will need a computer for this step. Using a USB cable, connect your Android phone to your PC then using file explorer navigate inside your phone internal memory to locate the ‘WhatsApp directory’. Please note, if your phone is set to open the Phone PC suite when connected to a PC, please chose the option of activating internal storage instead.

Navigate inside your old phone’s internal storage to the ‘WhatsApp directory’. Next copy this directory either to your computer hard drive (if you are not able to connect a second USB to the computer). After successful copy completion, disconnect your old phone from your computer.

Next connect your new Android phone to your computer. Then copy the ‘WhatsApp directory’ from the computer hard drive to your new phone’s internal storage. Since this is a new Android phone, the WhatsApp directory should not be within the internal storage. If it already exists, then your phone probably came with WhatsApp preinstalled, you can simply proceed with the copy and select overwrite when the computer alerts you a folder with the same name already exists.

Step 3 – Install WhatsApp on your New Phone

After successfully doing the above, disconnect the new phone from the PC and visit Google Play Store to download the WhatsApp. After successful installing the app, run it and proceed with setup process as you normally do.

Once the setup process is complete, run the WhatsApp while your phone is connected to your phone. Voila! You should now get all your WhatsApp chat messages from the previous phone, in your new WhatsApp running on the new Android phone.

Please note, the above trick only works with one Android phone to another Android phone. You cannot use the above instruction to transfer chat history from an Android phone to an iOS or Windows Phone, the vice versa is also true.
