Remember the havoc caused online just recently by WannaCry Ransomware? Well, a 23-year-old British cyber-security researcher Marcus Hutchins, working from his bedroom analyzed the ransomware’s code and came up with a way to stop it completely.
Hutchins immediately became the digital security ‘Super Man’ who came to the world’s rescue from the malicious ransomware. Well, this ‘Super Man’ has been arrested in the United States for allegedly creating a separate malware targeting banking systems.
Hutchins was arrested last Wednesday shortly before he boarded a plane to the U.K from Las Vegas. He was in the city for the annual Def Con conference, an event that brings world class hackers together to discuss matters cyber-security issues.
Hutchins is currently facing charges for having connections to the Kronos malware, which infects PCs through email attachments. The malware allows hackers to steal banking login credentials from people’s computers. The allegation covers a period between July 2014 and July 2015, during which, Hutchins supposedly took part in the creation and distribution of Krono in platforms like the hackers forum on the dark web.
The U.S. Department of Justice said Hutchins “was arrested in the United States on August 2, 2017, in Las Vegas, Nevada, after a grand jury in the Eastern District of Wisconsin returned a six-count indictment against Hutchins for his role in creating and distributing the Koros banking Trojan.”
From a hero to a suspect in online digital heists, Hutchins is being seen by some as the wolf in sheep’s skin. Hutchins in his blog post says, he came up with a stop to WannaCry Ransomware while working from his bedroom in southwest England. Hutchins is said to have been working for the LA-based Kryptos Logic, an online security company that offered him a job back in 2016 after reading his tech blog.
Hutchins case is set for hearing today, and it is set for organizing his legal representation.
