HackJos: Hotels.ng wants to hire winning hackathon team, and the package comes with free housing!
Members of the winning team in the just concluded #HackJos hackathon have been rewarded by Hotels.ng with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be employed at Hotels.ng to build innovative software products alongside the Hotels.ng software development team. Winners also got a free three day stay at a hotel courtesy of the Nigerian hotel booking service.
This move is expected to encourage greater participation in future editions of #HackJos, whose aim this year was to unearth the best hackers in the Northern region of Nigeria working on relevant social solutions.
Speaking for Hotels.ng, Mr. Mark Essien, CEO and founder said: “We are always on the lookout for technical talent. The winning team at #HackJos have shown that they have what it takes to survive in an environment that demands the very best from you”. He also indicated that this is the first of many more Hotels.ng plans to encourage software developers in the country.
The winning team, known as Team Crystal, developed a mobile based GSM-based home automation system. Nnamdi Ibe, Emmanuel Okorie and Bebeyi Grace Abiodun created this system that uses a mobile device from anywhere in the world to control electrical appliances in the home or office. This application features sensors that detect temperature, light intensity and motion changes in the environment and relays real-time feedback on the state of the appliances to an interface on a mobile phone.
The winning team members are Computer Science undergraduate students of the University of Jos, Plateau State. In a press statement released before the hackathon, Hotels.ng indicated that its interest was in participants who:
Demonstrated an ability to think innovatively in taking on and completing a task.
Showed they had an innate ability to organize, clarify and communicate ideas succinctly and accurately.
Displayed their strengths as independent thinkers willing and able to express and support a point of view.
