How to activate Dark Mode on Chrome Browser without using a hack

google chrome dark mode

For some time now, Google has been working to bring native Dark Mode to Chrome browser; this work has been ongoing for over six months now. Though users can access the feature, it is only available in beta mode, and that would require you to have some technical skills and resilience to work with experimental software. As they could backfire!

That is why we say to use Dark Mode on Chrome, one needed to hack their way through it. However, with the release of Chrome version 73.0.3729.108, Google has pushed the feature to the stable channel; though it is not active by default.

With Chrome 73, Google is testing the feature with a handful of users on the stable channel. Word has it that with Chrome 74, it will be merely a matter of digging into the settings (Settings > Personalization > Choose Default App Mode > Dark) to turn the browser dark.

The Dark Mode features on Chrome

When turned on, the Dark Mode ‘shuts the white’ on the Settings, Menus, New Tab page, and other UI features on the Chrome browser.

Dark Mode is now the in-thing these days, as more and more people become cautious on the health implications of staring at the white screen all day until late into the night. Microsoft added dark mode on its latest Windows 10 version, and so did Apple in its latest macOS Mojave. We also expect Microsoft’s upcoming Chromium-based Edge browser to natively support dark mode.

To get the Chrome Dark Mode, ensure you are running the latest version of the browser. If you have enabled automatic update, check to see if it updated, if not, manually kickstart the update process.
