The three big smartphone makers from China – Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo are having a good field day in the international markets selling more devices than their rivals would care to admit. That is according to the latest report by the research firm Gartner, who just released the Q3 2018 smartphone sales report.
As per the report, the three companies are credited for pushing the global smartphone sales to over 389 million units. Though Samsung still takes the lion’s share of the global smartphone sales having sold 73.3 million units within the quarter, it has ceded some grounds to the Chinese smartphone maker. Samsung has lost 3.4% of its market share year-on-year.
On the other hand, Huawei has seen a substantial growth in its market, from 9.5% of the global market share in the Q3 of 2017 to 13.4% in Q3 of 2018. Huawei sold over 15 million more units in the Q3 of 2018 compared to the same period the previous year.
“The gap between Samsung and Huawei continues to shrink, as Huawei expands aggressively by investing in branding and distribution in the emerging markets of the Middle East, Asia/Pacific, and Africa,” said Anshul Gupta, a research director at Gartner.
“Huawei is, for example, aggressively positioning its affordable Honor series smartphone to drive the shift from feature phones to smartphones in those markets.”
The other two Chinese brands, Oppo and Xiaomi collectively sold 63.7 million devices in the Q3 of 2018. In the previous period, they sold 56.2 million.
We all know Apple’s strategy has never particularly been on selling many units, rather selling each unit as expensively as possible. Though in terms of global smartphones sales ranking, the Cupertino comes in at an impressive third position with 11.8% of the market.
