Well, folks, it’s here – Apple finally unveiled the latest iDevice in the iPhone sequel, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. You would think these two phones were the center of attention at yesterday’s Steve Jobs Theater, well, wrong. The iPhone X stole most of the attention at yesterday’s event. Apple released the iPhone X as a special tribute to their ten years run in the phones-and-computers-making business.

We will get into the iPhone X a little, later on, first let us scrutinize the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus phones. When you look at these two new iDevices, they resemble the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus released last year. Except for the fact, that unlike their 2016 predecessors, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus have an all-glass back plate.

For those of you who remember the iPhone 4 and 4s, the all-glass back plates on these new iDevice is actually a blast from the past. Apart from their aesthetic value, the glass casing makes for a better wireless charging capability.

Pop up the hood and you will soon realize these new iDevice comes with some significant upgrades compared to the earlier models. These upgrades include:

It is not just an all-glass back plate: As we earlier stated, the glass back plate is not just for the aesthetic purposes. The glass enables the phone to charge wirelessly with a higher efficiency. Then again, isn’t glass brittle? Not this one! Apple says the glass used on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are reinforced internally by a steel and copper structure to make “the most durable glass ever to be used in a smartphone.” You might have noticed the pretty hues these glasses have; Apple says they were made using a 7-layer color processing to give them these hues.

Wireless Charging: I think we have just about exhausted all there is to say about the new wireless charging. Nonetheless, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus will charge wirelessly using the Qi-compatible wireless chargers. Apple says it is collaborating with various Qi wireless chargers makers to make them widely available to the public. Still, on that front, Apple is said to release a dedicated Apple AirPower chargers for your iPhones, Apple Watch, and the AirPods sometimes in early 2018.

Fast Charging capability: In addition to the wireless charging, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus supports fast charging. You will be able to charge up to 50% under just 30 minutes.

The new A11 Bionic chip: The new iDevices are being propelled by Apple’s latest hexacore chipset, the A11 Bionic, giving the devices unparalleled performance compared to their predecessors. Compare to the A10 chip running in last year’s iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, the A11’s four efficiency and two performance cores are 70% and 25% respectively faster.

The iPhone 8s’ camera beats the iPhone 7s’: Apple claims that although on paper the iPhone 8 pair have a camera with similar specs with those of the iPhone 7 pair, this year’s versions are superior. The iPhone 8 has a single 12MP camera with f/1.8, while the iPhone 8 Plus has a dual-camera; one with the same specs as the iPhone 8 but the secondary shooter has a f/2.8. Apple adds that the iPhone 8 pair cameras are larger and faster than those on the iPhone 7 pair. You can expect RGB sensor that takes in up to a maximum of 83% of the light, meaning brighter pictures even in low-light surroundings.

Portrait Lighting: This is a feature exclusive to the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X. Portrait lighting uses depth-sensing algorithm powered by the new A11 Bionic chip to intelligently cut out the face and manipulate the lights to mimic stage lighting and contour lighting among other techniques used by professional photographers.

Bluetooth 5.0: The iPhone 8 pair are able to transmit data faster and from a greater distance using the latest Bluetooth standards, Bluetooth 5.0. That is speeds twice as fast as what you get on Bluetooth 4.2.

While no MicroSD slot but onboard storage is big: Apple seems not convinced you should have a MicroSD card to extend your storage, and with the iPhone 8 pair, it is giving you fewer reasons to complain about that. For one, the base model of either iPhone 8 variant comes with 64GB onboard storage; twice what you get on iPhone 7 base model. The internal storage goes up to 256GB for those really in need of more space.

True Tone displays: On the screen front, the iPhone 8 (4.7″) and the iPhone 8 Plus (5.5″) have a tiny difference from their iPhone 7s predecessors. A tiny bit that makes a lot of difference, Apple has added True Tone technology, which makes the screen display colors correctly under a wider range of lighting conditions. Apple says, when you read an e-book on these iDevices, the pages will look paper-white.

Stereo Speakers for Superior Audio Experience: Perhaps as a consolation for the removal of the headphone jack, Apple has fitted stereo speakers in the iPhone 8 pair. These speakers are said to be 25% louder with deeper base and just perfect for you to express your ‘g-side’ with a banging hip-hop song as a ringtone.
