Is iPhone 8 Still Worth It In 2020 1

If you are still wondering why the iPhone 8 is still a topic of debate among tech enthusiasts, you are likely to get more confused. Spoiler Alert, it may be because of the pricing. Ever since Apple launched the iPhone 8, it has enjoyed its dominance among other similar spec’d devices.

However, Apple Fanatics paying for a premium device is nothing new. For example, those who paid close to $1200 for the 512GB iPhone XS have already crossed the four-figure threshold and the prices are on the rise.

So, how does the 3-year-old device hold up, and is it still worth buying in 2020?

The answer is quite simple and complicated at the same time and here’s why,

The iPhone 8 and the 8+ are definitely worth buying but I won’t outrightly go out and buy them right away because right now, they are just not a great deal anymore.

Let me explain,

Apple charges $750 for the smaller 8 models and $850 for the 8 plus. However, if you are lucky enough to buy from a network carrier you might get it cheaper. Buying from Apple directly at these ridiculous prices is just not worth it for me.

Still, in 2020, both phones are worth it either in used or refurbished form.

Although both 8 and the 8+ are dated phones, they still run very well on the latest version of iOS 13 and they’ll probably still get a few more years of Apple’s software support. The 8+ comes with a glass back, although it does look good makes the 8+ a bit more fragile and it can shatter when dropped on a hard surface. A case will definitely help in keeping your phone safe, you should keep that in mind when buying the 8 Plus.

Here are some other features that make the iPhone 8 worth buying for its price in 2020:

Wireless Charging

The 8 and the 8+ support Wireless Charging which makes them a good option for those looking for this feature. Wireless Charging is a feature that is very common among new devices and having it on the 8 series which are dated phones make it all the more exciting.

You don’t have to worry about plugging in to charge the device, just place your phone on the wireless charging pad and that’s it! Your phone will start charging as soon as it’s on the wireless charging pad.

Water Resistance

You can’t beat the water-resistance feature that is included, if the phone slips into a pool or your washing sink, you wouldn’t need to freak out or run to the phone Repair shop in a panic, the design is specially made so that water cannot slip into the inner components of the phone.

Battery and Performance

The Battery and RAM on the 8 plus is 2691 mAh and 3GBs respectively and it lasts longer than the 8 and is faster when compared to other the phones of the same class.

The 8, however, has a small battery and therefore might not have the best battery life especially if it’s been used pretty heavily over the years.

Battery life is where the 8+ might have the upper-hand over the 8.

They both flaunt the Apple’s A11 Bionic chipset and its performance is good even in 2020.

Display

If you are one of those people who don’t mind thick bezels then it doesn’t get better than this. Let’s talk about bezels for a bit, they do feel thick especially when compared side by side to the new generations of flagships. The upside to this is, the phone feels rugged and the display is flat so, you won’t be facing any palm rejection touch problems. The hardware feels nice and everything is snappy.

The display used on the iPhone 8 is a 5.5-inch Retina IPS LCD with 326ppi density. It is a sharp display, in fact, it’s sharper than the iPhone XR but not as vibrant as the iPhone 11 as that has an OLED panel. The colors are plenty accurate and you won’t notice any difference in daily usage if you don’t compare them side by side.

We’ve come a long way since the release of the iPhone 8 but it still holds up and will be enough for an average user. It’s pretty impressive what this phone can do considering it’s a couple of years old.

Camera

Another great feature of Apple Phones is their class-leading camera, they take great-looking photos with a single tap. You don’t have to fiddle with the settings to get good shots.

It has a 12MP main sensor with f/1.8 aperture along with Optical Image Optimization (OIS).

On the front, it has a 7MP selfie camera and it is good, nothing extraordinary. It takes great shot if the lighting conditions are right. In my opinion, the front camera shouldn’t be your main concern or a factor in deciding if you want to buy this phone.

Software

Both 8 and 8+ run great on the latest version of iOS 13 thanks to the latest update. It handled everything I’ve thrown at it without any visible lags or delays. It is no iPhone 11 but I was impressed with how well it still performed in 2020.

Final Thoughts

So, unless you are getting a crazy deal, iPhone 8 price is definitely something you really need to consider thoroughly before making a decision. Its definitely on the cheaper side compared to its RRP back in the days. You might want to check out Phonebot’s cheap phone section for great deals in Australia.

Verdict?

The decision to purchase the 8+ is still not simple as it is in the market for some time now and Apple has stopped selling it due to iPhone SE 2020 which is almost $300 less than the XR.

So, it all boils down to the deal you’re getting. Consider other retailers and deals before pulling the trigger.

Good luck!
