Jonathan’s Good Luck Runs Out As #NigeriaDecides It’s Muhammadu Buhari

Nigeria’s General Election is just about to draw to a close but if the presidential tally is anything to go by. The opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari will be Nigeria’s next President.

Lai Mohammed, the APC spokesman, told Reuters, “This is the first time in Nigeria that a sitting government will be voted out of power using purely democratic means… The people of Nigeria have taken over.”

By the above statement, Nigeria’s President-in-waiting, Muhammadu Buhari ruled the country in 1983-1985 after seizing power in a coup. He was later ousted by General Ibrahim Babangida in 1985, after which he declared himself a democracy convert. He has since run for presidency and lost in several previous elections.

Goodluck Jonathan’s five-year term as the President of the most populous country in Africa and the continent biggest economy. His tenure has plagued by various corruption scandals and an unprecedented rise in the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram. His party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has ruled Nigeria since 1999, after the end of the military rule.
