Kenyan Blogger Charged For Inciting Ethnic Animosity Released On A $5,700 Cash Bail

Seth Odongo is a student at Kenyatta University in Kenya who has taken a liking to blogging. Following the dreadful terrorist attack that rocked Mpeketoni in Lamu County and killed over 100 people, Seth like most Kenyans took to social media to air their views about the Kenyan security situation.

Allegedly Seth posted some remarks on his Facebook page which earned him a ticket to the prison cell. Kenya’s Chief Magistrate Ellena Nderitu charged him with intent to stir up ethnic animosity between Kenyan communities. It is important to note that Seth turned himself in to the police for questioning when he got detained.

Seth Odongo alias Dikembe Disembe was released on Monday on a cash bail of Ksh.500,000 ($5,700). The cash bail was initially set at Ksh2 million ($22,800) but his lawyer James Orengo negotiated for its lowering. His lawyer termed the initial cash bail figure as too high and prohibitive to civil liberties. This comes after Principal Magistrate Hellen Ndung’u reduced the bond imposed on him from Ksh5 million ($57,000) to Ksh2 million.

After his release from the prison cell, Seth spoke to the press where he said he was innocent but insisted that there are still pertinent issues that Kenyans need to talk about, even though they are painful.

I just want to make it clear to everyone involve in this case that I believe that justice will be found,” said Seth as he vowed to keep blogging about social issues affecting Kenyans. He also said he will continue supporting the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) through his blogs.

The mentioning of the case has been slated for August 8th, and the trial will be on September 4th. 2014.
