This has been an adrenaline-filled week for 15 tech startups from across Africa. As they try to outshine one another at the ongoing TechCrunch Startup Battlefield Africa in Kenya’s Capital Nairobi. Well, the TechCrunch judges, came, have been seeing, and are now starting to render their verdict.
Of the 15 African startups going at each other’s neck for the Startup Battlefield Africa 2017crown, Kenya’s Lori Systems has bagged the first place price. Coming in first, Lori Systems will walk out of the TechCrunch podium with $25,000 and an all-expenses-paid trip for two to the tech center San Francisco to take part in the Disrupt SF 2018. A flagship event also by TechCrunch.
Lori Systems was crown the Most Promising Startup in sub-Saharan Africa. The startup also came first place under the productivity and utility category.
How Lori Systems works: The Nairobi-based startup has created a logistics platform said to disrupt the cargo tracking business in Africa.
“We look forward to meet Lori Systems again in San Francisco, where it will join the best and brightest entrepreneurs, investors, hackers, and tech fans in the world for the global Startup Battlefield,” said Ned Desmond, the COO of TechCrunch.
AgroCenta is helping more than 8,000 farmers to improve the agricultural value chain. In particular, small farmers in rural areas are facing many challenges to access large markets. The startup is helping them cut out the middlemen, and optimize truck deliveries to large markets thanks to an online marketplace.
When farmers get an order, they can handle all the logistics through AgroCenta. More importantly, many farmers can now generate decent revenue, which leads to a better standard of living.
SynCommerce wins the prize in the gaming and entertainment category, which also included fashion. The company has been working on the perfect service for e-merchants. If you’re running a small e-commerce business, you know that it can be painful to list your products on multiple e-commerce websites.
SynCommerce lets you list all your products on Shopify, eBay, Etsy, and soon BigCommerce and Amazon. The service can even look at your inventory and hide products on all your platforms if you’ve run out of stock. Existing customers have been noticed a huge increase in sales after switching to SynCommerce.

Startup Battlefield, running from 2007, has been highlighting the best and the brightest startup ideas on a world stage of venture capitalists, businesses, and government agencies. The competition has so far matched over 700 startups with the right investors and networks, leading to them raising over $7 billion in funding and almost 100 exits.
This is the first time TechCrunch has brought the competition in Africa, as Startup Battlefield Africa.
