LG Sets Up A $900m Plant To Manufacture Roll-up OLED Displays For Phones, Smartwatches…

Following the unveiling of an impossibly thin wallpaper-like OLED Display with a dimension of 55 inches and weighing in at just 1.9Kgs (4lbs).

The demand for these roll-up OLED displays from LG has been exploding. So much so that the electronics manufacturer has embarked on a plan to set up a $900m roll-up OLED Displays production plant in Korea.

The plant is expected to be up and running by 2017, at which point LG says it will be able to make about four times as much as its current production of the roll-up displays. LG is targeting small screened devices like smartwatch, smartphones and tablets that would enhance user’s experience with the bendability characteristics.

Already, most of the high-end electronic devices from LG and its competitors like Samsung and Apple are using the OLED technology to make the displays. The smartphones use P-OLED while the smartwatches use AMOLED technology.

LG also intends to build another larger plant in the future that will cater for the production of TV-sized displays using the same 6th generation manufacturing system. Its rival, Samsung has already pledged $3.6 billion towards OLED production.

Sang-Deog, head of LG Display’s OLED business unit as cited by the Daily Mail, said: “We should be able to supply a satisfactory volume to our clients from July or August, which means we’re hoping to buckle down production as well as promotion from the third quarter. It has taken a year and half for us to raise to this level (for OLEDs) while it’d taken nearly ten years to achieve the yield for LCDs.”

Earlier this year, LG Display launched their 55-inch, 66-inch, and 77-inch models of the OLED TVs. They are now aiming at releasing a 99-inched OLED TV before the end of the year. Many experts are saying that OLED displays are the next big thing, and their global shipment will outpace LEDs shipments within the next decade.
