The Serena has two hotel facilities in Uganda, one is located in the heart of Kampala city and the second one can be found off the Kampala- Entebbe highway in Lweza, you can book a suite via Jovago to any of the Serena’s and have the hotel pick you up with their hotel vans or available vehicles or you can drive there yourself. The turn off Fuelex petrol station and onto a dirt road that has views of luxurious mansion up the Lubowa hill and into the valley leading you to Kiigo.
We got an opportunity to be invited for lunch with Chef Nicholas, the Executive Sous- Chef at the hotel who welcomed us into the expansive Serena Marina kitchen, the marina is just next to the lake and is surrounded by well manicured lawns that have pretty birds trotting and flying around on one side and the Lake Victoria on one. You can easily notice more than 10 species of bird all over the bay including pelicans and ducks that lazily float around surrounded by growing water lilies as golfers tee away.
There are boats docked at the marina including the Uganda Police Navy boats with a number of Policemen having a rest after a night out patrolling the waters, they are quite friendly and can even let you onto the boat to take pictures with them. The marina gives you access to the areas far from Kampala that you can easily access via boat.
The marina restaurant is quite serene, you have a full view of the lake and the scattered islands in the distance. The menu ranges from Ugandan tilapia to seafood, the Chef made a delicious grilled beef medallion and a whole tilapia fresh from the lake.
The tilapia was simmered in coconut milk and tomato sauce with a hint of chillis served with a glass of chilled white sweet house wine, while the grilled beef medallion was a char grilled Ugandan strip steak with potato hearts served in red wine sauce with a red house wine.
After such a sumptuous heavy meal, there’s a big chance of you booking a room at the hotel for a night to rest and enjoy being out of town for a day.
