Michelle Obama Talks About Racism During Her Speech At Tuskegee University in Alabama

U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama was at Tuskegee University last Saturday. While addressing a crowd of graduates and their families at the 2015 commencement ceremony at the Tuskegee University, she spoke about her personal battle with racism as the first African-American first lady in U.S.

Mrs. Obama further talked about the Tuskegee Airmen, who were the first U.S. World War II African American pilots. During their time, the Tuskegee Airmen faced a lot of institutionalized discrimination, with official army reports describing them as “shiftless,” “childlike,” and “unmoral and untruthful.”

As cited by The White House Press Office, the first lady said, “Just think about what that must have been like for those young men. Here they were trained to operate some of the most complicated, high-tech machines of their day. Yet when they hit the ground, folks treated them like they were nobody – as if their very existence meant nothing.”
