MIT Global Startup Labs

The Wits University in South Africa is currently receiving applications for the MIT Global Startup Labs program. The program aims to teach entrepreneurs skills to build technology startups.

The program will run for a month and will arm the participants (from world’s emerging economies) on how to leverage on technology for a successful entrepreneurship career. The South African edition of the competition will see participants group into teams of between 3 – 5 members. The teams will then learn and experience firsthand various processes of innovating and building a technology startup.

The teams will attend classes where they will be taught how to create a business model for their various business ideas. They will also be instructed on how to build an app.

The program kicks off June 29 through to July 29, 2017. The venue for the training will be the Wits University’s Digital Innovation Precinct dubbed Tshimologong. Applications remain open until May 24, 2017.

How to participate

You must meet these following minimum requirements; you must already have a startup idea, which you would like to pursue further, or you are already pursuing it, but the venture is still in its early stages of development.

When forming teams for the classes, as a requirement, at least one member must have the technical skills to write computer codes. All applicants must demonstrate a sense of cohesion, drive, and creativity to qualify for consideration for the program.

Professor Barry Dwolatzky, the JCSE Director, and Tshimologong founder said, “We are looking for teams of three to five people who either already have a startup idea, or are in the nascent stages of pursuing it already. This is a fantastic opportunity to boost entrepreneurship and technology, which is vital to the development of our local economy.”
