Two months ago, Namibia’s Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) rolled out a network infrastructure upgrade plan dubbed 081EVERY1. The program was officially launched by Namibia Deputy Minister of ICT, Stanley Simaata. The plan entails MTC setting up 524 new network sites over the next two years; a move that will see the telecom increase its footprint across Namibia by up to ten folds.

The plan network upgrade will see 412 and 88 new sites erected in both the rural areas and urban areas respectively across all the 14 regions that make up Namibia. The plan also involves upgrading 2G networks currently servicing rural areas to 3G. It is only the urban areas that have been having full 3G networks and in some parts 4G networks.

Already the telecom has announced the setting up of five new sites across the Oshana region. Where the network was upgraded from 3G to 4G as part of its NAD$1.1 billion (US$ 79,458,412) expansion plan. The setting up of 4G sites in the Oshana region comes after a similar move where MTC set up eight similar sites in the Khomas region as at the end of October 2017. MTC seems to focus on improving connectivity across the Windhoek’s CBD area.

The Chief Human Capital and Corporate Affairs at MTC, Tim Ekandjo reiterated the telecom’s resolve to improve network coverage for all citizens across Namibia.

These exercises are a necessity due to the fast-growing network traffic capacity in many parts of the country. We do not plan to stop until total population network coverage is a reality. These upgrades are underscored and rest exactly at the core of our two-year-projection. And as we continue, we plan to maintain the momentum,” said Ekandjo.

MTC says its plan to roll out 4G connectivity is compounded by the rapid uptake of smartphones use across the country. The telecom was also on a campaign to roll out over 5,500 partly-subsidized 4G handsets in 2016.

The roll-out of the aforementioned was central for us to prepare well ahead in making 4G network availability in rural and semi-urban areas a necessity. Hence, it is an undertaking which MTC will see implemented across the country to live up to the expectations of our valued customers.”
