Nigeria has 91 million Internet Users – NCC

Nigeria has almost twice the population of Kenya using the internet. That is according to stats released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which puts the figure at 91 million internet users across the West African country.

The NCC report says in April, the number of internet users in Nigeria stood at 90,124,428, and by May, that number rose to 91,565,010. NCC, as the authorized telecommunications industry regulator in Nigeria releases Monthly Internet Subscribers Data.

NCC went further to elaborate that user numbers on both Global System for Mobile (GSM) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) networks grew during the period. Of the 91,595,319 internet users in the month of May, 91,565,010 of them were GSM networks subscribers, and another 30,309 users were on CDMA.

Additionally, GSM service providers got an additional 1,440,582 subscribers to their 91,565,10 subscribers in May, against 90,124,428 recorded in April. CDMA customers remained at 30,309, same as that recorded in April.

The NCC report also shows that during the month of review, MTN had 31,406,411 subscribers using its internet services. The telecom also recorded a 600,464 increase in its internet subscribers in May.

The same report says Globacom has 27,402,484 customers browsing using its internet in the month of May. The company also recorded some 211,713 new users from the 27,190,771 that were surfing on the network in April.

Airtel Nigeria had 19,912,661 internet users in the month of May and got a 504,811 increase to make it to 19,407,850 subscribers by April. Etisalat (now known as 9Mobile) had 12,843,424 subscribers and realized 123,594 subscribers increase to make it to 12,719,839 users by April.

The two CDMA operators, Visafone and Multi-Link, had a combined user base of 30,309 users on their network in May.
