Nigeria Outgoing President Jonathan Signs Cybercrime Bill Into Law
With less than two weeks in office, Nigeria’s President, Goodluck Jonathan has passed the Cybercrime Bill into law last Friday. Early in January this year, there were reports claiming that the Nigerian President had forwarded the Cybercrime Bill to the Senate for enactment into law.
The Chairman, House Committee on ICT, Dr. Ibrahim Gusau had put at rest fears that the Bill will be signed into law before May 29th.
The new Cybercrime law is expected to address internet usage and safety with regards to prevention, prohibition, combating cybercrimes and threats to the cyberspaces. It also prescribes the punishments cybercrime offenders should face in Nigeria.
Nigeria National Assembly website, writes that the Senate at a plenary session on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 passed the harmonized Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Bill 2015 (S.B. 438) into law.
The site further adds: “The passage of the Bill followed the presentation of Senate Conference Committee Report on the harmonized legislation by the Committee Chairman, Sen. Umaru Dahiru. On receipt of the report, the Senate approved and adopted the report as well as put the Bill on voice vote before Distinguished Senators and it sailed through.”
