A survey was done across 70 different countries to establish the state of entrepreneurship, by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM). GEM measured the countries yearly growth in terms of entrepreneurial activities using the numbers of new business ventures that were started within the last 3 to 42 months ago. Out of the 70 countries survey, 11 countries were from the African continent.

The report of the survey showed that Nigeria, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, Ghana, Angola and Namibia have a higher new business ownership rate, compared to Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC).
