The Odd Animals that made news around the world in 2017

As we bid goodbye to 2017 and prepare to usher in 2018, it is only right to take a look back down the memory lane and see what stood out. Here is a list of amazing animals that did unique things, had unique things happened to them, or are unique in by themselves.

#1 – The White Giraffes

A pair of ghostly white giraffes were seen roaming the plains of Garissa County in the Ishaqbini Hirola Conservancy in the eastern parts of Kenya. These giraffes were the very rare white giraffes. When a video footage of the wild animals made it online, it elicited a lot of interest internationally.

Founder of the Hirola Conservancy, Abdullahi H. Ali was enthusiastic when he pointed out that this footage was the first video of the white giraffes. The giraffe’s pale cottage is the result of a genetic condition referred to as leucism, which prevents the formation of the normal skin cells pigmentation.

#2 – Britain’s Hero Dog awarded a medal

Mali, the dog, played a crucial role in sniffing out the booby traps and militants of the Taliban. Mali was part of the troops sent by Afghan and British Special Forces back in 2012. Mali was awarded the Dickin Medal.

#3 – Snakes kept the Bangkok fire department working full throttle

Bangkok is known for having a lot of slithery and hissing residents. The snakes often find their ways into people’s toilets, swimming pools, flooded streets, and just about anywhere in the house. The Bangkok Fire and Rescue Department has been tasked with the responsibility of safely removing the animals from people’s homes. However, 2017 was a record year for the fire department.

They got over 31,800 calls to take out snakes from homes, a number that is three times higher than what they used to get five years ago.

#4 – Animals evacuated from the Syrian Zoo

Nine animals (three lions, two tigers, two bears, and two hyenas) were left abandoned and trapped inside a zoo on the outskirts of Aleppo in Syria. The animals were in such a deplorable state, and they needed to be evacuated to save their lives. In July a team made up of a journalist, and a businessman from America evacuated the animals to a rehabilitation center in Turkey.

#5 – Donkeys jailed for four days in India

Indian law enforcement authorities made international headlines after they jailed eight donkeys for four days because they have expensive taste. The four donkeys were accused of eating several saplings planted near the jail. The authorities said each of the plant was worth $1,000 each.

A local TV showed footage of the donkeys coming out of a dingy jail in a single file. They all had their head bowed, doing the classic police perp walk.

#6 – A rare bison’s death followed keenly online

In September, a very rare wild bison wandered into Eastern Germany from Poland. When it was spotted in the town of Lebus, a local official ordered it be gunned down. A hunter shot the rare bison drawing condemnation from far and wide across the globe.

The shooting of the bison triggered outrage, and the World Wide Fund for Nature in Germany went and filed a lawsuit against the official.

#7 – The freezing Elephant that was warmed using Giant Blankets

Myanmar experienced an unseasonal cold weather and elephants at the Winga Baw Camp animal orphanage were freezing. One baby elephant broke the internet when a picture of it covered in large blankets hit the internet. The temperature dropped to a 40-year low, and the works at the Camp scrambled to keep the animals from freezing to death, and they knitted and crocheted big blankets for the elephant.
