OneDrive Integration in Windows 10: Review

Microsoft introduced its wonderful cloud storage service in the form of OneDrive for Windows 8 users. The tech giant promised deeper integration with more features in the later versions of Windows. As the Windows 10 Technical Preview is getting updated, we are observing that OneDrive is following the approach of Dropbox. The users of OneDrive application for Windows 8 were unhappy with its performance. They demanded user-friendly features like that of Dropbox. In this article, we review the OneDrive integration in Windows 10.

OneDrive app resides in your system tray. When you see the green progress indicator just below the icon of the app, then it shows that it is syncing files or connecting to your account. You can right-click to access the settings and manage storage. The storage management options will open the setting page in your browser. If you desire to manage storage on your laptop or tablet, you need to go to PC Settings->OneDrive->FileStorage.

You can easily click the icon to see when it was last updated, to open OneDrive folder, and to view the sync progress.

You can choose the folder to sync with OneDrive. The application has changed its way of syncing files. Previously, the application kept just a thumbnail on your local drive, and then fetched the files when you tried to access them. Now, all files synced with OneDrive will be available all the times, similar to the Dropbox feature. This strategy could also be problematic if you choose a lot of files and folders for syncing. They end up getting huge space in your hard disk. Select what you want to sync from Settings->Choose Folders. Once the synced folders will show in your OneDrive in the File Explorer. Many people are not happy with this feature at the moment.

OneDrive will easily integrate with your Office apps as well as giving you the option to sync your documents, spreadsheets, and presentations from within the app. The settings of the apps are kept unchanged more or less. As you are signed in with your Microsoft account, you can’t remove your device.

In short, the biggest change in OneDrive integration with Windows 10 is the way of syncing files. Instead of “placeholder” files, your files will be readily available anytime you desire. The users of Windows 10 will certainly enjoy OneDrive integration as a better experience from its Windows 8 counterpart.
