Paying for your parking in Rwanda’s capital Kigali has now gotten much faster and convenient for the motorists.
This development comes following a partnership between MTN Rwanda and the authority tasked with the collection of parking fees around Kigali, the Kigali Veterans Cooperatives Society (KVCS). In this partnership, MTN Mobile Money platform will be used by motorists to send their parking fees to the KVCS. The motorists will get their ticket instantly, thereby limiting time wastage compared to the previous means they used to pay for parking.
MTN recently launched an annual MoMo Month, a campaign seeking to promote cashless economy across Rwanda. The telecom’s partnering with KVCS to set up a cashless payment for parking is seen as one of the programs MTN is achieving under its MoMo Month campaigns.
MTN is also said to embark on a countrywide MoMo Month campaign to create a public awareness and appreciation for a cashless economy through the MTN Mobile Money. The telecom’s CEO, Bart Hofker says it is very important for the company to partner with other government agencies and players in the private sector to make cashless transaction widespread across the Rwandan economy.
“We are proud to continuously champion innovation to meet the growing demand for technologies that drive efficiency and boost convenience to MTN’s rapidly growing customer base. It is for this reason that we have introduced a convenient and cashless way to pay for parking fees or fines using MTN Mobile Money,” said Hofker.
His counterpart, the KVCS Managing Director, Frank Ntabana applauded the partnership saying digitizing parking fees collection promises great efficiency in their service delivery.
“We believe that this platform is convenient for motorist and will help ease access to our services… We are confident that this partnership will give our clients better services.” Said Ntabana.
Motorists in Rwanda who have subscribed to the MTN Rwanda network can dial *799# > Select Language > Enter Car Registration Number and you will get a message informing you of the balance due on your parking ticket and any fines. You can then put in the amount you want to pay for your parking, then another message will pop up asking if you approve of the payment via mobile money. You can then proceed and enter your PIN to enable the transaction and MTN Mobile Money will send you another message confirming the transaction went successfully.
The system also allows you to pay for your parking fees in full or partially for a week or a month.
